Packing the Perfect Personal Carry On

Packing the Perfect Personal Carry On

Packing the perfect carry-on is an art that took me nearly 23 years to perfect. I remember being a little girl and feeling stressed packing my carry on. I never had to worry about packing my suitcase- my mom took care of that. But packing my carry on? I had to remember to pack all the things that would entertain me for the ENTIRE flight to wherever I was traveling.

Fast forward to my 23-year old self, and I no longer stress when packing my carry-on… my suitcase is a whole other story. Maybe part of the stress relief lies in the technology that is accessible today. One iPad can double as a book, game, coloring book, and CD/MP3 player.

Now I’m not talking about the carry-on roller-board that I store in the overhead bin. I’m talking personal item under my seat… That personal item should have all the necessities that you need to stay relaxed and entertained all flight long.

So without further delay, I present to you my carry-on must haves:

The Basics

Number 1 on my list is probably the most important on this list- a stylish bag, that is both comfortable to carry and can fit all of your necessities. Mine is the Marc by Marc Jacobs New Q Hiller Convertible Hobo which comes in taupe, black, and a variety of other colors.

Numbers 2 and 3 are important as well- a good pair of sunglasses and vision glasses (if necessary). I would not travel to any destination – cold or hot- without my sunglasses. My current favorites are the Ray Ban Aviators in Silver Gradient. I can’t see far without my glasses so I don’t leave town without them.

I’ve raved about, number 4, my Unisex Circle Scarf by American Apparel in previous posts– it doubles as a blanket, is a warm scarf, and is super fabulous. I even bring it to warm locations in case I get sunburnt and need something soft to sleep on. Don’t question it- just buy it.

Number 5 is a no-brainer… honestly- travel is made so much easier in comfy shoes… I prefer Nikes but any sneaker or flat will do.

Technology

I always travel with three pieces of technology: my phone (not pictured), my Fitbit Alta with a silver metal band (number 6), and my iPad mini (number 7). I also make sure my iPad is fully protected in my bag by putting it in a cushioned carrying case. My favorite Marc by Marc Jacobs case is both protective and functional.  The case doubles as a storage unit for any ticket stubs, boarding passes, or business cards I may pick up during my travels.

Make Up Case

This is a quintessential part of your purse, whether as a carry on or not. My make up case carries much more than just make up. I switch up the case depending on where I am going and for how long. Honestly, there is very little make up in it. I carry must have medications – Tylenol and Emergen-C. I also make sure to have a chapstick (when traveling I love Vaseline Lip Therapy with Aloe). I also carry either wet wipes or hand sanitizer, just incase I’m far from a sink or need to wipe down my tray table. I also carry a pen and a small notebook, Bloomingdale’s Little Black Book is a favorite… Amazon has an awesome alternative too!
